Is It Possible To Get Implants In One Day? Yes, But There's More To It

It surprises many people to find out they can go through a dental implant procedure in only a day. You certainly can, but there are some things you should know first. It's a streamlined process, but it requires more than a day. Here's a little about each step along the way.

A Procedure by Any Other Name

The first thing you need to understand is there are many different terms out there for same-day implants. This can confuse people into assuming there are tons of different methods, but really, these terms are describing many of the same procedures. For example,

  • Same day implants
  • Implants in a day
  • Teeth in one
  • Teeth in an hour
  • Teeth in a day
  • Immediate load implants

You may come across many more names besides. In most cases, these describe procedures where you will receive your implants, but you'll leave with temporary teeth.

In all cases you will have to return for your permanent teeth. However, the implants will already be in place, and you can grow accustomed to using them with the temporary teeth in the interim.

The Process in General

Consultation - Typically, the same day implant process will start with a consultation. During this consultation, you will learn about the options available to you. You will also have your chance to ask questions and learn about pricing schemes.

Examination – This part of the process will consist of a checkup and overall examination to make sure that you're eligible for the procedure. If you are, it will go directly into treatment planning. The planning will usually require a 3D scan. After you and the prosthodontist figure out a plan, you will schedule your procedure.

Procedure – This is the actual single-day procedure. First comes the removal of your existing tooth (if any). Then comes the implant process. There are many ways to go about the implant process, but a popular procedure is the "all-on-4" procedure.

When done, you will walk away with temporary teeth supported by your new implants. These temporary teeth represent functioning prosthesis, so you can start using them immediately.

After the Day

You will have to return for your post-procedure checkup. Even though you have functional temporary teeth, there's still a certain amount of recovery involved. Your checkup is to make sure everything is happening smoothly. After you're all healed up and ready, you will received your permanent teeth.

So while it's a little misleading to think this full process will happen in one day, it's still far better than the several months it can take for the traditional implant process. Everyone isn't eligible for these same-day procedures. If it sounds appealing to you, then speak to a dental professional about it first.
